How to Get Rid of Paint Smell Fast (Fans Work, but Not Right Away)

Here’s how to get rid of paint smell fast: start with a low-VOC paint, set up a cross-breeze once the walls are touch-dry, and run a carbon air purifier on any night you have to close up. Most of the smell is gone by day two, even though the paint keeps curing for weeks.

On our interior painting jobs, we handle the smell on a schedule: before the first coat, while we paint, the first night, and day two. That’s how I’ve laid it out below.

Before the First Coat: Pick a Paint That Smells Less

Most of what you smell is volatile organic compounds, or VOCs, leaving the paint as it dries. They’re the main reason paint fumes affect indoor air, so the easiest fix is using less of them from the start.

These are the cans we set out for one whole-house repaint. The ceilings got ProMar 200 Zero VOC and the bedrooms got Harmony, because the family was sleeping in the house during the job.

We chose the zero-VOC cans for the rooms this family would sleep in during the job.

Low VOC paint smell isn’t only about the base. A zero-VOC base can still smell once a strong colorant goes in, especially in deep colors. We have ours tinted with zero-VOC colorants. Even then, low-VOC paint still has some odor, and paint testers still recommend good ventilation, so airflow still matters.

While We Paint: Open Up, but Hold the Fans

We open windows as soon as we start, as long as it isn’t foggy or blowing rain. What we don’t do is aim a fan at a wet wall. Blowing air across fresh paint kicks dust onto it and can dry the edges too fast, which leaves lap marks.

So the fans wait until the walls are touch-dry, usually an hour or two in, and then they point out a window to pull air through the room instead of at the paint.

If the house has a bathroom or kitchen exhaust fan, we run that too, since it pulls air out all day.

The First Night: How to Air Out a Room After Painting

The best way to air out a room after painting is a cross-breeze: one window pulling air in, another pushing it out. On the Central Coast, the afternoon sea breeze does most of that work for free.

On this living room in one of our Morro Bay homes, we opened the casement windows on the ocean side and set a twin window fan blowing out on the other wall. The breeze came straight through and carried the smell with it.

The catch is the marine layer. Once the fog rolls in, the air turns damp, and damp air slows drying. That’s when we close up and switch to a carbon air purifier with the door shut, so it cleans one small room instead of the whole house.

In this bedroom, the fog had come in by evening, so we closed the windows and left the purifier running overnight.

Day Two and Three: When the Smell Fades

Most of the smell leaves in the first 24 to 48 hours, as the water and solvents evaporate. The paint keeps hardening for a few weeks after that, but curing doesn’t come with much smell. A room is usually fine to use once the smell is gone, as long as you go easy on the walls.

This was a little boy’s bedroom. We painted it in zero-VOC paint with every window open, and the parents moved him after 2 days.

Rentals: Smell-Free Before Check-In

A vacation rental can’t smell like paint when guests open the door. For this rental in Pismo Beach, we finished painting two days before check-in. We kept the windows open through each afternoon breeze, ran a purifier overnight, and handed the place back to the cleaners the morning before guests arrived. We also move the furniture back where the owner had it, so the place is ready to stage.

What Doesn’t Help Much

Bowls of onions, vinegar, coffee grounds and baking soda mostly mask the smell, and candles just add another one. Air fresheners put more VOCs into the room. Bags of activated charcoal help a little in a closet or small bathroom, but they’re slow in a full room. Fresh air and time do the real work.

FAQ

Is it safe to sleep in a room the night it’s painted?

We’d rather you didn’t. Sleep in another room the first night, and move back once the smell has mostly cleared, usually after a night of airing out with low-VOC paint. For a nursery or anyone sensitive to smells, give it two nights.

Do zero-VOC paints have no smell at all?

They still have some. The binder and other ingredients have a mild smell while they dry, and colorants can add more.

Is paint smell harmful to pets?

Keep pets out of freshly painted rooms until the smell clears. Birds are especially sensitive to fumes, so move them to another part of the house.

Why does a room still smell days later?

Usually it’s damp weather, a room that stayed closed, or a deep color with a lot of colorant. More airflow on a dry afternoon usually clears it.

Can I run the AC or heat to clear the smell?

Central air mostly pushes the smell into other rooms unless it brings in fresh air. Open windows and a fan do more.
